|         | Jr. Livestock Show Superintendent: Jose Cordova Special Livestock Rules • A Sifting
Committee, approved by the Taos County Fair Board, will inspect and examine
show animals prior to filling in entry forms. Animals which do not meet the
minimum weights or exceed maximum weights or are not properly groomed will not
be eligible to enter the auction ring. •
Department Superintendent(s) and the committee has the
authority to enforce all applicable rules of the junior livestock division. The
decision of the committee is final. • Market
animal minimum and maximum weights are as follows: -Steers 900 lbs.
no maximum -Pigs 200-275 lbs -Lambs 85-135
lbs. • Animals
(breeding or market), except poultry and rabbits, must have been owned by the
exhibitor and must be under the supervision of the County Agent. Swine projects
must have been owned by the exhibitor not less than 90 consecutive days prior
to Fair date. Beef projects (market or breeding stock)
must have been owned and managed for a period of at least 120 days under
supervision of County Agent. •
Instruction in fitting animals at the Fairgrounds is allowed, however, fitting
by adults is prohibited. No one except exhibitors and officials will be allowed
in the show ring while animals are being judged. All animals must be shown by
their owner in the Judging Arena. No exceptions will be made unless owner has a
valid reason acceptable to the superintendent and arrangements have been made
with the superintendent in advance. If an exhibitor has more than one entry in
a class, a substitute qualified exhibitor may be used. • In case
of question of any breed placement or weight classes, final decision will rest
with the livestock superintendent. • All
livestock must be halter broke and/or gentle to handle. • All
cattle will be tied in the stall with a good halter and neck rope. • All
livestock must be free from any disease and parasites. Sheep with ringworm
lesions, sore mouth, foot rot, scabies or Club Lamb Fungus will not be allowed
to show or sell. • Stalls
and pens must be kept clean at all times. • All
animals must be weighed prior to entry, and will be classified light, medium or
heavy accordingly. Weigh-In will take place beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Friday,
August 24th. Re-weighs will be allowed at the discretion of the Livestock
Superintendent. • All
exhibitors are required to present their project record book for each project
animal entered at time of weigh-in in order to be eligible to show and sell in
the Taos County Fair and Jr. Livestock Auction(s). • Record
sheets must be up to date and include beginning inventory, cost of purchase of
livestock, feed costs and feeding record, beginning weight(s), health records,
exercise records and project summary information. No exceptions will be made on
this rule. • Champions
and Reserve Champions will be from the 1st or 2nd place winners from each
class. • Boars
shall be no more than six months of age. • Each
exhibitor must provide a $20 deposit that is refundable if pens are cleaned
after the Fair. • No more
than three species of animals may be shown and/or sold by an exhibitor and only
one may be a steer. No more than 2 lambs, 2 hogs, 2 goats, 2 chickens, 2
rabbits, 2 turkeys, 2 ducks, etc. may be sold by an exhibitor. These should be
designated by the exhibitor at entry time to the Livestock Superintendent. (1
steer/2 lambs, or 1 steer/2 hogs, or 1 lamb/2 hogs or 2 lambs/1 hog, or 1
steer/1 lamb/1 hog, or 1 lamb/two rabbits, or 2 rabbits/1 turkey, or 2
poultry/1rabbit, etc.) • Lambs
shown in breeding classes cannot be shown in market classes and vice versa. • All
market lambs will be slick shorn to a uniform length no more than
¼” of wool prior to arrival at the County Fair. • A 4.25%
administrative fee will be assessed of each animal sold in any of the Jr.
Livestock Auctions. • All hogs
must have been originated or purchased within the State of •
Showmanship Competition will take place Saturday, August 26th, during the judging.
A showmanship award will be given to the best showman of each species. • Dress
Code for livestock exhibitors will be strictly adhered to. Boots, leather or
heavy canvass shoes must be worn at all times in and around pen area. No
sandals, cut-off shorts or spandex. No sleeveless or cut-off shirts and no
halter tops. Long sleeve, button up collared shirts tucked into clean blue or
black denim pants and a belt will be worn while exhibiting animals. Clean, neat
appearances are encouraged. If hair is past chin length it must be neatly tied
back away from the face in a braid or pony tail. • All
exhibitors must designate their livestock, regardless of species, as either 4-H
or Open Division. A separate area will be designated for Open Division
exhibits. • Only 4-H
Division livestock will be sold. Open Division livestock entries will not sell
through the Jr. Livestock Auction, however they may be
sold through private treaty sales after the Jr. Livestock Auction has been
completed on August 25, 2007. • Pigs - must
be derived from a pseudorabies-free herd. • Sheep and
Goats - Tattoo will be required, a 4-H tattoo will be
placed in left ear. Note: Each animal acquired out-of-state will require a vet
health certificate and entry permit. • Show
Steer - NM current registered family brand or a closed 4-H brand on left jaw.
No brand--No show! Note: Each animal acquired out-of-state will require a vet
health certificate and entry permit. • DEADLINES
TO ACQUIRE LIVESTOCK: a. Steer deadline is February 15th b. Sheep, pig and
all small livestock deadline is May 15th. • Weigh-in
time for livestock projects will be August 24, 2007 • 4-H
members must be present at all times during the show and auction. • 4-H
members who participate in the Junior Livestock Show must also participate in
the showmanship competition. • Recordbooks will be reviewed by a committee, which includes
the County 4-H Coordinator, one Senior 4-H member and
one 4-H club leader. Should the committee deem that a recordbook
is not complete, it will be returned to the member so that he/she will be able
to complete the book prior to the County Fair. Recordbooks
may be turned in beginning August 6th, until August 24th--weigh-in day. • Only the
Grand Champion Baking Project of a member 9-19 will be sold at the Jr.
Livestock Auction. Cloverbud or other lower place
items will not be sold. • Recordbooks must be finished, notwithstanding the results
of the judging or placing. Photographs need not accompany the recordbook at this point in time. A copy of the bill of
sale, complete paperwork, including actual receipts of feed, equipment, etc.
must be included in the recordbook. Should the recordbook not be complete, the 4-H member will not be
allowed to sell at the auction or participate in the showmanship competition,
but is eligible to participate in the open division with no opportunity to sell
in the Junior Livestock Auction. • All 4-H
members will be required to attend two of three class/training sessions on
animal nutrition, showmanship or animal schools presented during the year. • The
Junior Livestock Auction will take place on Saturday, August 25th, at 2:00 p.m.
All exhibitors must be on hand by 1:30 p.m. for recordbook
review by prospective buyers. • A special
auction will be held immediately following the Junior Livestock Auction for Cloverbuds exhibiting poultry & rabbits only! Cloverbuds may only show one rabbit & one poultry; however they may sell only one animal. • Cloverbud Policy & Guidelines: Cloverbuds
are encouraged to exhibit their projects at the County Fair. Cloverbuds will not be allowed to enter the competition
level. Cloverbuds will not be able to sell their
animal projects at the Junior Livestock Auction except as stated above. The
animals can be sold by private treaty. • 4-H
members with special needs will only be required to complete a picture story,
to include drawings and/or photographs of projects and general project
activities that the child has been involved in during the course of the year
and breakdown of the cost of the 4-H project. Parents are encouraged to help
their child accomplish this task. Parents need to notify the Extension Office
of their intent to participate in this program. • Youth not
enrolled in the Cloverbud or the bonafide
4-H program, but want to be involved in exhibiting horses or other livestock,
are not considered 4-H members; even if participation is allowed at the club
level through family affiliation (i.e. children of enrolled leaders, 4-H
members, siblings, etc.). Proof of insurance for the youth as well as a release
of liability will be required by the County Extension Office prior to
participation of the youth at any level. • There
will not be a resale after the auction has ended. Any animals available for
resale will be sold by private treaty only by each club, organization, etc. • 4-H
Members may enter up to 2 Meat Pens in the Rabbit Department. A Meat Pen = 3
Utility Rabbits in one pen. One Meat Pen = one entry. 4-H Members can enter up
to two rabbit entries (i.e., 2 rabbits or 2 Meat Pens or 1 rabbit and 1 Meat
Pen. Only one Meat Pen will be allowed to be sold at the Jr. Livestock
Auction. Cloverbuds
are not allowed to show or sell a Meat Pen. • Goats:
All milk teeth must be in place with no eruption of permanent teeth. Goats are
not to be older than 6 months of age/ or not to have been born before February
15, 2007. Wether and doe kids will be allowed to be
co-exhibited in the market classes. Market goats must be slick shown with 3/8
inch of hair or less above the knees and hocks. There will be no top limit on
weight, with a 25lb. minimum bottom weight limit. Exhibitors will be allowed to
use halters or collars in the show ring. Exhibitors will not lift the front
legs of goats off of the ground or brace the animal during judging. The weight
classes will be light, medium, medium heavy, heavy and Grand/Reserve Champion
Market Goat, Grand/Reserve Champion Dairy Goat. Lambs: Exhibitors will not lift
the front legs of the lamb during judging. |
